My younger brother reminded me of this since his eyes improved when he took Lutein, as advised by my mother, who has been suffering from cataract for some years but afraid to undergo medical procedures due to old age (80 years old). He told me that he instructed my daughter to buy Lutein for my mother as she complained of blurry vision.
There was a change as I viewed things better than before.
This is an interesting article about lutein and zeaxanthin written by Dr. George Torrey, "Lutein for Preventing Macular Degeneration".
According to the article, "Lutein is the dominant component in the peripheral retina. Zeaxanthin is the dominant carotenoid in the central macula."
Dr. Johanna M. Seddon, it further says, conducted some related studies. She and her associates at the Harvard University found that 6 mg per day of lutein led to 43% lower risk for macular degeneration. Recommended per day intake is 6 - 30mg. This is the reason I took only 5 soft gels per week. (30mg x 7 days = 210mg / 40mg = 5.25 soft gels / week)
There is a printable chart showing the lutein and zeaxanthin concentration in some fruits and vegetables.
